A bottom gillnet fisher caught and brought this juvenile (Carcharhinus melanopterus) to market. (500g is Rs 1200). The most tragic aspect is that many consumers prefer to purchase juvenile shark species because they believe it is beneficial to breastfeeding and pregnant mothers. Additionally, consumers in Sri lanka prefer requiem shark species over the other shark groups as they believe the meat of requiem sharks may enhance lactate production. However, there is no scientific evidence to support this claim.
